RESIDENTIAL ELEVATOR BOOM TO ACCOMMODATE BEIJING ELDERLY

2018-01-16

District governments in Beijing are subsidizing the construction of hundreds of new residential elevators as the city looks to accommodate its growing elderly population, The Beijinger reports. Approximately 200 new units are planned in nearly 30 neighborhoods in the Haidian District. These units will join 214 elevators in Beijing's northwestern jurisdiction added in 2017. In the Fengtai District, approximately 100 elevators are planned. Often incorporating glass walls and "noiseless" machinery, the elevators are being added to the outsides of apartment buildings originally designed for only a stairwell. Beijing's elderly population is expected to increase from 23% now to 30% of the total population by 2030.
