NO HOLIDAY EMBARGO FOR BROOKLYN SUBWAY ELEVATOR WORK

2018-11-26

Construction on an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant elevator at the 86th Street subway station in Brooklyn, New York, will continue through the holidays, despite previous plans for a “holiday embargo” that would have halted work through Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reports. Construction began on June 1, and businesses along the busy shopping thoroughfare in the Bay Ridge neighborhood have already felt a negative impact. Consisting of two ADA elevators — one connecting the street and mezzanine and another connecting the mezzanine and train platform — the Metropolitan Transportation Authority project is slated for completion in 2020. Despite the inconvenience, Councilmember Justin Brannan notes “we’ve been waiting decades for these elevators” and is hopeful the end will justify the means.
