WMATA COVERING DUPONT CIRCLE STATION ESCALATORS

2019-04-22

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) plans to start installing a 97-ft.-long X 82-ft.-wide glass-and-steel canopy to protect both escalators and passengers at the north entrance of the Dupont Circle station in Washington, D.C., later this month, WAMU 88.5 reports. Opened in 1977, Dupont Circle has WMATA’s sixth-longest escalator system. It takes a frequent beating from rain and snow. The elliptical canopy of more than 200 framed glass panels, outfitted with multiple light fixtures, will not only save passengers from pulling out their umbrellas, but also protect new equipment once the system is replaced. The station will remain open throughout the project, which is expected to be complete in early 2020.
